ROUND
6 & 7 PREVIEW
YARRAWONGA MURRAY - 12.15PM FRIDAY 6 MARCH - STABLEFORD &
MATCHPLAY SEMIS
YARRAWONGA LAKES - 10.00AM SATURDAY 7 MARCH - STABLEFORD & MATCHPLAY
PRELIMS
BLACK BULL GC,
YARRAWONGA - 8.40AM SUNDAY 8 MARCH - MATCHPLAY FINAL |
 |
 |
|
YARRAWONGA MURRAY |
YARRAWONGA LAKES |
The "Massey Final's Super
Weekend" is at
Yarrawonga Murray and Lakes Course
on Friday 6 Mar
@ 12.15pm and Saturday
7 Mar @ 10.00am respectively, playing stableford.
As we did last year
I believe that on Sunday 8 March @ 8.40am at Black Bull will now be
the
"matchplay singles" day of the proposed "all
weekend" 6 v 6 (Ryder Cup style) matchplay teams event which will
also include The Matchplay Final! The groups for
Friday & Saturday will be drawn to reflect the 6 man teams, being
represented by 2 v 2 in each group and will probably be playing a fourball/bestball
on Friday
for "all weekend" team points and maybe Fourball/Aggregate Pairs on
Saturday in conjunction with the Massey & Matchplay events
Murf will have it all sorted.
The
Matchplay finalists will probably be in the last group on each day.
Playing
groups and Team v Team matchups will be
selected by the Team Captains (Matchplay Pool Winners) on Thursday &
Friday evenings.
Sundays playing
groups including the all important singles match ups will be
selected by the Team Captains on Saturday evening.
Massey Recap:-
Glenn, chasing his sixth Massey crown, last won
in 2022/23 when The Yellow Breasted Cock Sucker was first sighted has
a 2 pt lead over Gooey (chasing his
4th, last won in 2018/19). Meanwhile Henry has jumped to third but
is 8.5 pts from the lead hoping to "Not" win The Massey for an 11th time (last one was 2024/2025).
Bean is not far behind him in 4th while Mike has crashed to 5th and
13.5 pts to make up.
The
Matchplay semi finals are Pool A
- Tubbsy (0 Semis, 0
Finals for 0 Win) v Murf (5SF,3F,1W)
winner to play Mike (4 Semis,
4
Finals for 1 Win) in Prelim Final and
Pool B - Gooey
(7SF,4F,3W) v Henry (3SF,2F,1W).
winner to play Q
(4SF,3F,1W) in Prelim Final.
Mike
is still an outside shot at achieving the famed "Massey Triple
Crown" after winning Scoot's
VB Classic at Montuna.
The Massey & Matchplay Double is still a possibility for Gooey,
Henry and to a lesser extent Mike & Murf.

ROUND FIVE
WRAP - DROUIN GC |
Hot & steamy with a top of
around 30deg

once again filled in.
Tubbsy had a sudden return to form to belie his rising handicap with
an excellent score of 42 (20 out / 22 in) and Gooey (22/15) & Bean
(18/19) came in equal 2nd with 37pts each.
Other scores were:
GMart 36 (20/16), Henry 35 (18/17), Q 35 (19/16), Murf 33 (16/17),
Jimmy 33 (19/14), Twat 32 (15/17), Schimma
31 (15/16), Robbo 31 (18/13) & Mike 28 (15/13).

ROUND
5 PREVIEW -
DROUIN GC - 12.08pm
SUNDAY 1
MARCH 2026 -
STAB |
The next
round is
at
Drouin Golf & Country Club on
Sunday
1
March
from 12.08pm
playing stableford.
The
playing groups with matchplay pairs are as follows:
Group
1
Group 2
Group 3
Bean v Tubbsy
(Pool A)
Q v
Murf (Pool
A)
Robbo v Wally
(Pool A)
Schimma v
Jimmy (Pool B) Gooey v
GMart (Pool B) Henry
v Mike (Pool B)
In Pool A - Murf & Q are playing
for top spot and a direct route to a Prelim and have secured a place
in the semi, win lose or draw. While Tubbsy & Bean are playing for
the other spot in the semi. Then Robbo.....well Robbo is fucked!
Unless Tubbsy & Bean are no shows.
In Pool B - Mike is
in prime position to go straight to a Prelim. Glenn needs to win or
hope Schimma, Henry & Jimmy all lose. Schimma & Henry need to win &
win bigly if Gooey loses to Glenn. While Jimmy is still a
"mathematical" chance if he beats Schimma and Henry & Glenn both
lose!
BBQ & beers in the car park after
the game.
No chart form, as we have only played two rounds at
"The Track".

THE ROUND
THREE
WRAP - BEACON
HILLS Country Club |
|
Strong easterly winds and a warm 27 degrees
greeted us for our first sojourn in Beacon Hills since 1988. Wally was our only scratching
and was replaced by Ross (Rossco) Newman.
A welcome return to form for Robbo saw him win the day with a score of
38 (18 out / 20 in). Murf also climbed the Massey table finishing 2nd
scoring 36pts (20/16) and Gmart (3rd) consolidated with another good
score of 35 (15/20) his lowest score this season and takes the overall
lead!
Other

Henry 34 (18/16), Gooey 34 (19/15), Rossco 34 (20/14), Schimma 32

THE ROUND
TWO
WRAP - LANG LANG GC |
|
A very windy 35 to 45 km/h with gusts to 60km/h
made scoring difficult for most. Wally was our only scratching.
No problems though for GMart (17 out/ 21 in) and The Bean (21/17) who
came in with a pair of 38's to share the big points. While Henry (17/19)
& Schimma (20/16) shared 3rd place with 36 pts each. They
were the only ones to manage par or better.
Other
scores were:
Tubbsy 30 (13/17), Mike 30 (18/12), Gooey 26 (13/13), Robbo 26

THE ROUND
ONE
WRAP - BAY VIEWS GC |
|
We returned for another go at kick starting the 41st
edition of The Massey. This time in beautiful warm & sunny conditions
around 26 degrees and I think for the very first time a midweek round on a
Wednesday. Wally, Tubbsy & Robbo were unavailable and Dickie filled in
one of the spots for us..
The 1st & 18th holes were under renovation and had temporary tees making
the holes much much shorter than usual. 18 played as a 92m par 3!
Gooey put on a master class to claim victory with a very high score of
46pts (22 out / 24 in - 79 strokes). Q also scored well with 44pts
(21/23) for 2nd and Murf with a very handy 40 (22/18) came in 3rd.
Other
scores were:
Jimmy 39 (21/18), GMart 38 (18/20), Mike 38 (21/17), Bean 38
(19/19), Schimma 31 (17/14), Henry 30 (15/15) &
Dickie 29 (14/15).
PERSONAL MASSEY BEST: Strokes

"NOT"
ROUND ONE
WRAP - BAYVIEWS GC - TOTAL
WASHOUT! |
|
There were two known scratchings
for the day with Schimma & Wally out and Ol'
Mate(s) Twat & Kenny were in as subs. While Robbo, well Robbo just didn't bother
turning up at all.
The rain had well and truly set
in and there was no end in site. It was unanimously decided to call the
day off and postpone to another day.
So we all headed down to the BBQ
area
for a couple of hours to make use of the "supplies".
The only action for the day was watching Q make 47 attempts at reverse
parking his fogged up ute in the pouring rain. Many considered it to be
more of a "look away" moment. What can I say! These days I get excited
just thinking about parking in a tight space!!!
We were able to ratify that the top 3 players (total
6) qualify for the Matchplay Finals as proposed. It was also agreed that
all forfeit's are worth only 2 points regardless of playing a sub. This
resolves the problem of who gets to play for the extra point when there
is only one sub and three scratching's. Lets face it, if you can't
make the top 3 in your group with a free gift of 2 points for a forfeit
in what would have been a 50/50 match then you don't deserve to get in.
Also discussed was the option
of playing Canadian Pairs (alternative shots) on the Sunday of The
Finals weekend. This would involve only 5 pairs plus the Matchplay
Final pairing. We could hold the singles matches (6 team points) on the
Saturday during The Massey final round bringing the 6 man team event to
a close after 9 matches as Friday can still be the 4BBB pairs or
Aggregate Stableford Pairs (3 team
points) during round 6 of the Massey. (It was also mentioned
that there should be no coaching of your team mate as The Massey points
must come first to keep the integrity of the overall result - every point can
make a difference!).
Anyway, Round 1 has now been rescheduled to
Wednesday 3 December at 12.30pm back at Bay Views with the after match
BBQ at the foreshore reserve (see map in preview below.

Round 7 Saturday

YARRAWONGS LAKES
Day 3 Sunday
8 March at
8.40am - BLACK BULL
All these dates / courses will be listed
in "SCHEDULE" tab if you need to find them again.
The starting handicaps are shown to the left (in the FINAL SCORE
table) and starting groups are determined by the crossing over of
the matchplay tables ie 1st, 3rd & 5th of Pool A are re-pooled with
2nd, 4th & 6th from Pool B and the previously set Matchplay schedule
using player numbers 1 to 6 sets the groups - ie no draw required.
The playing groups with matchplay pairs are as follows:
Group 1
Group 2
Group 3
Q v Bean (Pool A)
Tubbsy v
Wally (Pool A)
Murf v
Robbo (Pool A)
Mike v Schimma
(Pool B) Henry v
Gooey (Pool B) GMart
v Jimmy (Pool B)
Note: *Henry's starting handicap has been
adjusted to 7.3 after the 10% (min 1 stroke) Walter Lindrum rule is
applied.
Now Gents, I have an idea to bring the Matchplay out of the VFL
era & into the AFL era by not 4 but 6 out of 12 players in the
finals ie "top 3".
The finals weekend would see A2 v A3 and B2 v B3 in semis on Friday
with A1 and B1 straight through to prelims on Saturday vs crossover
winners of Fridays semis. Then the winners of the Saturday prelims
meeting in the Grand Final on Sunday.
If we continue with the Super 6's concept you would then have 3
players for each team already selected ie A1/B2/B3 and B1/A2/A3.
Thoughts??
Also, since we were instructed last year not to BBQ in
the outside car park anymore we will now have our beers & sausages at the
foreshore BBQ shelter.
The Tom Salt Memorial Park Playground -
See map below. The portable BBQ will be onboard in case it is busy.

2024/2025 FINAL ROUND
WRAP - RICH RIVER GC ECHUCA -
WEST
COURSE |
Another hot top of 39 deg expected so
its is a bit of a relief to be playing in the morning.
Who will take out the historic 40th edition of the Massey. Gooey
(51Pts) looking for Massey number 4, Beano (49.5) striving for his 3rd.
Possibly an unprecedented 10th Massey for Paul "I've never won the
Massey, everyone else loses it!" West
(48.5). An unlikely number five for the floundering Q (43.5) or an
overdue 2nd for Mike (also 43.5). Surely, they won't totally capitulate and help Henry "not" win another one.
The Groups were drawn in accordance with the Super 6 Captains choices..... AS/GM/MH/RW,
IQ/DM/JG/PW & AC/MR/SL/MB.
(The leading five in bold letters).
At the half way mark the scores were:
Jimmy 20, Schimma 20, Henry 19, Wally 19,
Glenn 17, Robbo 16, Bean 15, Gooey 15, Tubbsy 15,
Mike 14, Q 14 & Murf 13.
The
"live ladder" with 9 holes remaining would see Henry take the
lead by 2pts over Gooey and 3.5pts over Bean. Schimma moves to 4th 7pts
behind. While in the immortal words heard this time last year, Q & Mike need
"to lift!!" would be 13pts adrift....
At the completion of the final round the scores were:
Robbo 40 (16 out / 24 in), Henry 38 (19/19),
Schimma 38 (20/18), Jimmy 37 (20/17), Glenn 32 (17/15), Tubbsy 31 (15/16),
Mike 31 (14/17), Wally 30 (19/11),
Gooey 26 (15/11), Q 26 (14/12),
Murf 25 (13/12), & Bean 23 (15/8).
(Capitulation completed!)
After coming into the weekend 7.5pts from the leader, it is extremely
disappointing to all but one, that, after the top three meekly
surrendered in the heat, Henry has now officially "NOT" won a 10th
Massey and the first time he "hasn't" won since 2015/16 and hopefully
he does "not" win like that again.
A classic example of how everyone else literally fell over and let him
"not" win again!!: Watch -
https://youtube.com/shorts/5nx24G6xTac?si=c1rUeykACqn51X-a
Super 6ixers;
Teams were drawn before the final Massey round by the Captains Henry &
Q.
The format for Day 2 is Four Ball Stableford Aggregate (Pairs).
The matches were called by the Captains as follows: AS/GM (A) v MH/RW (B);
IQ/DM (A) v JG/PW (B) and AC/MR (A) v SL/MB (B).
Day 2 results were:
Match 4 - MH/RW (B) d AS/GM (A) 5 & 3.
Match 5
- JG/PW (B) d IQ/DM (A)
5 & 4.
Match 6 - AC/MR (A) d SL/MB (B) 5 & 4.
Team B now take an imposing 5 to 1 lead into Day 3 where there are 6
singles matches to be played..
More good fun was to be had on Saturday night as we mosey'd on over to the
clubs' dining room for a well earned meal after consuming copious
amounts off our refreshing ales to extinguish our dry palettes.
While waiting for our meals, Tubbsy gave us an unforgettable re-enactment
of Henry's impression of a beached whale after trying to run
across a hot sandy beach and blowing a calf muscle just short of the
waters' edge. The well refreshed Tubbsy lept from his seat
and proceeded to the middle of the now full dining room while
demonstrating how the stumbling Westy looked after apparently first
breaking his thong while taking on the hot sand then in further
desperation to get to the water he blows a calf ending up prostrate on the
beach
assuming the look of the stranded beast. All at the total bemusement of
the confused diners. "Does anyone have the number for triple 0?" may have been
heard or even "is anyone here a marine biologist?". Top stuff
Tubbsy!!
One unanswered question still remains, why did yours truly wake up
the next morning with the taste of ear wax in his mouth??
Day 3 - Match Play Final
between Gooey & The Bean (inc. The Super 6ers Matchplay Singles matches) is to be played at Rich
River GC (East Course) Echuca / Moama
on Sunday 23 February at 7.32am - 36deg with ominous dark clouds & possible storms.
The Groups/Super 6's matches as called by the Team Captains are....
Group 1 - Match 7 MR (A) v JG (B) & Match 8 AC (A) v RW (B)
Group 2 - Match 9 DM (A) v MH (B) & Match 10 IQ (A) v MB (B)
Group 3 - Match 11 GM (A) v PW (B) & Match 12
- The Matchplay Final
AS (A) v SL (B)
The Nancarrows Cup Matchplay Final: Bean v Gooey
As the day was designated for all matchplay conditions/games,
the card was marked only as win/loss or half.
The Front 9: Bean won the first hole and the 2nd was
halved. Bean wins again on 3 to be 2up. Gooey strikes back on the 4th
and the next three were halved before Gooey goes bang bang on 8 & 9 to
snatch the half way lead 1up. Looks like a tight one!
The Back 9: Not really much to write about as Gooey
wins on 10,11,12,13 & 14 to win his third Matchplay Final 6 and 4.

2024/2025 ROUND
SIX WRAP - RICH RIVER GC ECHUCA - WEST
COURSE |
|
Off to another new destination for our Massey
Finals Weekend.
Beano, chasing his third Massey crown, last
won when he completed his self acclaimed "Triple Crown" in 2011/12 has a
2.5 pt lead over Gooey (chasing his 4th, last won in 2018/19). Meanwhile
Q has slumped to third and now 5 pts behind following two very
disappointing rounds, clinging on in hope for a 5th title (last one was
2020/2021), but the real smoky currently in 4th who has been thereabouts
all year without causing much fanfare is Henry (who last won in 2015/16)
is within striking distance (7.5 pts) and chasing a precious "10th"
Massey with not a word of "It's in the Bag!" this year.
The Matchplay semi finalists are Q (4 Semis, 3
Finals for 1 Win) v Bean (10SF,3F,3W) and
Henry
(2SF,2F,1W) v Gooey (6SF,3F,2W).
All four are a chance to achieve the Massey
& Matchplay "Double" with The Mighty Bean also earning another
opportunity of picking up the "Triple Crown" after winning Scoot's
VB Classic earlier this season at Flinders.
Glenn, Murf, Jimmy, Mike, The Bean, Henry, Tubbsy and Wally arrived the
prior afternoon (Thursday). Schimma & Robbo arrived on Friday morning after
staying & having a round in Bendigo. While Gooey and Q rolled up just 10 minutes prior to tee off on Friday after taking a 5
hour "Cook's Tour" in an attempt to dodge peak hour traffic in Melbourne
was diverted via Healesville, Toolangi, Yea, Seymour, Murchison & Rushworth due to
unforseen road closures and other road works along the way.
Groups for the round were drawn in accordance with Murf's devised six man
weekend teams event (Super 6's) as follows.... DM/MR/RW/MB,
AC/GM/JG/MH, & IQ/AS/PW/SL (Matchplay SF's).
The weather was a hot top of 34deg.
At the half way mark scores were: Mike 21, Jimmy 20,
Murf 20, Schima 19, Gooey 18, Henry 16,
Q 16, Bean 16,
Glenn 14, Wally 13, Tubbsy 13 and Robbo 11.
At the conclusion of Friday's round Mike finished with an
impressive 41pts (21 out / 20 in) to win the round easily, 2nd with a 36
was Jimmy (20/16). While everyone else was falling away, Henry
got in for third on 35pts (16/19).
Other scores were: Murf 34 (20/14), Schimma 34 (19/15), Gooey
34 (18/16), Glenn 32 (14//18), Wally 32 (13/19), Bean
31 (16/15),
Q 30 (16/14 ), Robbo 29 (11/18) and Tubbsy 28 (13/15).
Gooey has now taken 1st
place overall with a 1.5 point lead over Bean who crashed heavily and
Paul (I don't win the Massey everyone else looses it) West, was
the big
mover, now into 3rd just 2.5 off the lead. Meanwhile Q
continues his downward spiral into equal 4th and 7.5 points behind with
Mike. Schimma heads up the rest 11.5 pts off the lead.
Nancarrow's Cup Match Play semi finalists were Q v Bean and
Henry
v Gooey.
The Front 9: Beano takes an early lead on the first
with a 5 for 3 then wipes the 2nd to bring it back to all square.
Another 5/3 and then a wipe on 3 & 4 keeps it at AS. Q has a 5/3 on the
5th to go 1up. 2pts apiece on the 6th then Q wipes the 7th and Bean goes
1up. Q has two strokes on the par 3 8th and registers a par for 4pts then
casually wipes the 9th as Bean bounces back and it is all square.
Gooey got off to a flyer with a birdie for 4pts as Henry wipes the
first. 3pts for Paul on the par 4 2nd squares it back up. The 3rd is
halved then Gooey gets a 3 pointer on the par 3 4th hole. Paul hits
straight back with 3 pts on 5 then Gooey replies with another 3 pts to
go 1up after 6. 7 & 8 are halved with 2 pts then Gooey wipes the
9th as Henry scrambles in with 1pt to also turn all square.
The Back 9: A halved hole on 10 before Bean goes 1up
after 11 as Q wipes. Bean then wipes 12 & 13 to hand back the lead.
Three pts each on 14 then the long walk to 16 (15 out of play) which is
also halved. Q wipes 17 and it is all square again with just 18 & 19 to play.
Q goes ahead with 3 pts on 18 but The Bean has 2 strokes on the par 3
19th. Bean bogies for 3pts as Q somehow wipes it and we have ourselves a
play off!
Two points each for Gooey & Henry on the 10th before Paul birdies 11
for 3pts and another 3 pts on 12 to go 2up. Gooey's wins 13 2pts to 1. Both
bogie the par 4 14th for 2 pts then both par the par 3 16th which sees
Gooey tie it all back up with an extra stroke. Gooey then wipes 17. The
18th is halved (2pts each) and Henry goes to the last 1up but Gooey has an extra stroke on the par 3 19th
hole. Henry pars it for 2 pts but Gooey answers with his own par and we
have ourselves another playoff!!!
The Playoffs: The
playoffs are to be staged on the par 3 19th hole where Gooey & Bean have
an extra stroke over their opponents. First off is Gooey & Henry and
both hit the green. Henry has two putts for a par and Gooey nails his two
putts to secure the win and go through to his 4th Matchplay Final to bag
his 3rd title.
Beano then tees off and is short of the green. Q's tee shot is on the
lower front half of the green (flag at the back). Bean's 2nd shot stays
on the lower half, Q then putts up to 1m and putts out for par. The
pressure now on Bean as he putts up but not enough to get up and rolls
part way back (an inch more and it could have rolled all the way off!). The Bean then steps up for a shaky 3-4m
uphill put that stops
at the lip for a second then drops in for the half - back we go
again... but there is a very large group congregating at the tee to
witness another playoff. So we decide to go back to the rooms with the
others to have a "hard earned" and come back when it is quieter. A half
hour later we saunter back to the hole and this group of Nimrods are
still there - turns out they were having an 18 person sudden death
shootout and had only just wittled it down to their final two. We stood
at the tee ready to go as we watched them putt out, while the others
were massed to the left of the green. Beano lands on the front of the
green and Q is in the front bunker. As we approach the green the large
group were still gathered there (heads on 'em like mice!) as two others
head back to the tee again - they had halved the hole and were still going!
Fucking great... anyway Q somehow manages to hit the llooong bunker shot
to 1m and make par as Bean easily 3 putts and its back to the tee while
we watch the other pair fucking halve it again....
The third playoff hole sees us halve it again with a par & bogey (I
suddenly got the feeling Beano could bogey this hole all night long).
Naturally, the other pair also halved again (did I mention that they
were triple bogeying - seriously!!). On our 4th playoff hole
("I SAID 4th JIMMY!!") Bean once again, from on the front
of the green gets his bogey while after 3 consecutive pars I eventually
(and predictably) 3 putt. As we patted each other on the back and made
our way to the cart near the madding crowd another errant tee shot from
the pair of Nimrods bounces and
hits Bean right on the outside of his thigh instantly creating a lump the size
of a golf ball, and so Bean "limps" into his 4th final chasing his 4th
win. Thank fuck that was over.....
Gooey
d Henry 1st play off hole.
Beano d Q 4th play off hole.
The Match Play Finalists (to be played on Sunday) are Gooey v Bean. Both with a chance of
achieving The
Massey Double and the Triple Crown is also still alive for The Mighty
Bean.
Friday evening was well spent with a very nice BBQ by the pool (meat
expertly prepared by
Jimmy) and plenty more BS throughout the night.

Coming soon to a computer screen near
you.......
Will Gooey sweat it out and hold on
for Massey number 4 or will "I've never won The Massey" Westy "not"
win his 10th? Can The Mighty Bean write another chapter of his
Triple Crown Odyssey and sign some more napkins? Does Q steady the
sinking ship and sail in for his
5th Massey (Oh stop laughing!). Or can Mike continue his fine vein of
form to score a miraculous come from behind, albeit unlikely victory?
