Another warm 28 deg forecast and not
much wind to speak of, you might say perfect conditions for golf with
absolutely, positively no fucking excuses. Some might even suggest that
if you didn't do well today then you weren't trying!!!
More history to be made with either a 2nd Massey or Matchplay for Mike
(50Pts),a 10th Massey for Paul "it's definitely in the fucking bag" West
(48Pts) or number four for Murf (also 48 - even if he is more focussed
on
and apparently been training all year with a steely resolve to win his maiden Matchplay title) or can the longshot Bean (41.5) fuck their shit up for
his 2nd title.
The Groups were drawn..... AS/GM/SL/Stoney, IQ/MB/JG/MR &
DM/MH/Joel/PW.
(The leading four in bold letters).
At the half way mark the scores were:
Robbo 20, Wally 18, Mike 16, Henry, Murf,
Glen & Stoney 15's, Gooey & Joel 14, Beano
13, then came teammates in the leading "aggregate team" Jimmy "The
Coach" 11
& Q 10 - Oh my, It was time for a half time pep talk from the
coach "we need to lift Quinny!"
The
"live ladder" with 9 holes remaining would see Mike extend his
lead to 4.5 pts over Henry & Murf, while The Bean has drifted to 13.5 in
arrears with a lot to do.
At the completion of the final round the scores were:
Robbo 41 (20out / 21in), Murf 38 (15/23), Jimmy the
Coach 35 (11/24 - The Coach lifted the roof!), Joel 33 (14/19)
& Glenn 33 (15/18), Stoney 32 (15/17), Gooey 32 (14/18) & Wally 32 (18/14),
Mike 30 (14/16 Oh oh!), Henry 29 (15/14
- "in the bag"....NOTTT!), Beano 26 (13/13), Q 21 (10/11 -
didn't lift a finger!).
And so, after commencing the final weekend 8.5 points from the lead,
Murf ultimately wins his 4th Massey by 5 points overall after
notching up 40 stableford pts on Friday (2nd place) then came home with
38pts on Saturday (also 2nd place). Which included 23pts on the back
nine - 2 shots under the card (off the stick) if you don't mind..... In
doing so he has broken a 24 year drought. Mike wasn't able to do enough to hang
on for the win but it was enough to finish runner up for the 4rth time.
Perhaps the forgotten story is the total capitulation from 9 time winner "it's in the bag"
Paul Henry West who failed to get 30 pts on either day to finish the
final weekend with two 10th placings to settle for 3rd overall 8 pts from
the winner (a 16.5 point turnaround).

8.0 revised to 7.0 after Walter Lindrum Rule (prev 9.0).
The Nancarrows Cup Matchplay Final: Mike v
Murf
According to a source very, very familiar with the matter;
The Front 9: Giving Mike a 25 shot head start was
always going to prove a tough ask - if he had a good day!
The match started with Mike putting one over the fence off the first tee
to wipe and put Murf 1 up, The game settled in on the tough early holes
with Mike chipping beautifully to take a 1 up lead after 5 holes
(following a win and 3 halved holes). With the match all square after 9.
(a win to Murf and 3 more halved).
The Back 9: A par on the 10th saw Murf lose the hole to
a bogey from Mike (with 2 shots) - the task now seemed impossible with
all the shots to come. 11 was the pivotal hole with Murf hitting a good
drive into the left rough and Mike taking 2 to get to Murf's drive. Then
a raking 6 iron from 150+ to a high green followed by a 20ft birdie for
4 points saw a win over Mikes 3 pointer to draw square in the match.
That proved to be the decisive hole with Mike losing the next 4 holes (2
to 3,1/2,1/2,-/3) for a 4 & 3 win to Murf. The match was much closer
than the scores indicated and it was hard to see a way to beat Mike
until he started missing those chips that he's so good at.
As mentioned earlier, The Mentonian Marvel actually played the
back 9 in 2 under for a fine round that also secured the overall Massey
and achieve the rare fete of The Massey/Matchplay double!
The Weekend Two Day Aggregate
prize money went to the team of DM/GM/MR with 177pts beating a bitterly
disappointed JG/SL/IQ (165), then Joel/Stoney/AS (160) & PW/MH/MB (157).
Stabrose Day was played at Black Bull
GC in Yarrawonga. Gooey had returned home for Grandson's first birthday
and Schimma had recovered just enough to be passed fit to play (under
duress). The three teams were: Stoney/RW/MR/AS, DM/GM/IQ/MB &
PW/Joel/JG/MH, min 4 drives each over 16 holes. DM/GM/IQ/MB
scored just enough (115pts) to win thanks to a sensational 5 iron from
Glenn on the 165m par 3 which finished 1.5 inches short of the hole
enabling Wally & Q (both with 2 shots) to tap in for 5 pts each. Not far
behind were PW/Joel/JG/MH on 112 and Stoney/RW/MR/AS with 110pts. The combination
of Murf & Glenn do it again & again!!
This gives the Mentonian Marvel a never seen before total clean
sweep of all the weekend events.
And now.....At the risk of a relapse and the reoccurrence of PTSD and
possible irreparable damage, my Psych. has encouraged me to share the
worst nightmares of Saturday's eventful round of aggregate team
golf.

SIX WRAP - COBRAM BAROOGA - WEST

Off to a new destination for our final weekend
away. Where Paul (It's in the bag!!) West, chasing an unprecedented 10th
Massey title is the current leader 2.5 pts
ahead of Mike and a whopping 8.5 pts ahead of Murf in 3rd place. With
Beano 9 pts off the lead in 4th and 5th place Schimma some 13 pts off
the pace and a late scratching after cracking a rib in a mishap at home in
search of the Good FridayTrophy. Costing him a spot in the Matchplay
semi. However, he will be in attendance to reprise the role of Mr
Sguiggle with the return of Bean's now famous whiteboard. Gooey has been promoted to the
semi after originally narrowly missing out.
Glenn, Murf, Jimmy, Mike, The Bean, Henry and "Wally" Beardmore arrived
the prior day (Thursday) where everyone enjoyed (well at least two did)
the Saints big win over the Pies to give the reigning premiers an "Owen
3" start to their season. Schimma, Robbo, Gooey and Q turned up at the
golf course prior to tee off on Friday. Unfortunately, "Freddy" Wigg was
unable to make the trip in his debut season and Joel Wiseman (Sat & Sun)
and another local "Stoney" (Fri, Sat & Sun) helped fill the groups.
Groups for the round were drawn as follows....
PW/MR/IQ, GM/DM/MH/SL (Matchplay SF's), JG/MB/JG/Stoney.
The weather was fine & very warm approx. 27deg.
At the half way mark scores were: Jimmy 23, Murf
21, Q 20, Robbo 19, Stoney 16, Henry &
Glenn 15, Gooey, Mike & Beano 13 and
Wally 12.
At the end of Friday's round Jimmy finished with a
supreme 44 (23 out / 21 in) to win the round easily, 2nd with a very
solid 40 (21/19)
was Murf
while Stoney fought hard to finish on 38pts (16/22) in 3rd place.
Other scores were: Robbo 35 (19/16), Q 33 (20/13), Mike
33 (13/20), Wally 33 (12/21), Bean 31 (13/18), Glenn 29 (15/12),
Henry 27 (15/12 WHAAAT!!!), and Gooey 27 (13/14).
A great fight back by Mike on the
back nine now sees him out in front with a 2 point lead over "It's in
the Bag" Henry who crashed heavily and an inform
Murf, who's great round has enabled him to
reduce an 8.5pt deficit to just the 2. Beano remains the only other
(outside) chance, still in 4th place and 7.5pts from the lead.
HANDICAP BEST: D.Murphy
9.0 (prev 9.6).
Nancarrow's Cup Match Play semi finalists were Glenn v Murf and Mike
v Gooey.
The Front 9: Glenn & Murf halved the 1st with 2pts
each, then Glenn with a 3 pointer goes 1up, On 3 Murf bounces back with
a 3 to square it up, then on 4 he drops a 1 pointer to go one down before making
another 3 to even it up again after 5. Glenn then wipes 6 & 7 and Murf
shoots 3's on 8 & 9 to win 5 on end to turn 4up.
Gooey takes an early lead in the other match with two soft wins to be 2up after 2. the 3rd
is halved, another wipe by Mike and he is now 3 down after 4. Mike has
now finished his warm up and fires 3 pointers on 5, 6 & 8. 7 & 9 were
halved and it is all square after 9.
The Back 9: Another win on 10 and Murf is now 5up.
Glenn hit back with a 3 on 11, 12 is halved with a pair of 3's. Glenn
takes 13 to bring it back to 3 down. 14 & 15 are halved and it is Dormy
3! Glenn wipes 16 and it is a 4 & 3 victory to Murf, presenting him with
his 3rd opportunity for a maiden Matchplay title and erase the demons of
the previous two defeats.
Three points each for Gooey & Mike on the 10th followed by two more
halved holes at 11 & 12 and it is still all square. On the par 3 13th
both sink par puts but it's 4 pts to 3 Mikes way to break the deadlock.
14 is also halved then Mike takes 15 & 16 to score a hard fought 3 & 2
win to remain undefeated in semi's and advance to his 4th final looking
for his 2nd title.

The Match Play Finalists are Murf v Mike. (Both with a chance of
achieving The
Massey Double)
Friday evening was well spent with a very nice BBQ (meat purchased by
Wally) and plenty of BS through the night culminating in Q & The Bean
putting in the big ones until 1.30am. Who's idea was that Bean?? I
have said it before and I'll say it again.... Never Again Bean, Never
Never Never Again!!!
The Final
Round (inc Matchplay Final) is to be played at Cobram Barooga - Old
Course
on Saturday 23 March at 8.13am.
The Groups were drawn..... AS/GM/SL/Stoney, IQ/MB/JG/MR & DM/MH/PW/Joel.
The four x 3 man teams for the Fri/Sat aggregate prize was also drawn
(post Friday's game for added drama) where the best two scores would be
counted from Fridays round and all three on Saturday. Teams (with Friday
sub totals) are: JG(aka "The Coach")/SL/IQ (77),
DM/GM/MR (73), Joel(absent)/Stoney/AS

BREAKING NEWS:
In news just to hand, Schimma
has advised that while standing on a table at home performing some
routine maintenance, he fell off, landing on a nearby chair and breaking
a rib. Subsequently he will, most unfortunately, be a scratching from
the Massey final weekend throwing the Matchplay semi's into disarray.
In further developments, The Rules on the Run Committee (ROTRC)
have already convened in an emergency session where it is believed they
had consulted the Massey Historical Archivist (MHA) in search of
precedence and found that during the 32nd Massey of 2016/17, Kenny
Baxter, who had also qualified for the Matchplay semis, fell from a
ladder while painting and broke his wrist.
The ROTRC decreed at the time that there
must be finals played and won to achieve the status of a
true winner - there will be no walkover or forfeit (including The Final
- if a semi final winner is for some reason scratched from the final,
then the loser of that semi shall advance to the final) - one cannot be
declared a winner without having played and defeated the said loser.....
Following that monumental and historic ruling, Jimmy The Griff,
through much lobbying of his own, (citing precedence with Carlton v
Essendon - supplements scandal disqualification) was
promoted/substituted from 3rd into the Semi's. He then went on to do a
"Stephen Bradbury" and win the final without even qualifying to be in
the semi's.
The ROTRC has further ruled that with Schimma's untimely scratching, the
new standings in Pool A sees Glenn finishing on top with Gooey (who
finished on equal points) now advancing into the semi's in 2nd place.
The Matchplay semis finals are now amended to: Glenn
(6SF, 1 Final for 1 win) v Murf
(4SF,2F,0W) and Mike (3SF,3F,1W) v Gooey
(5SF,3F,2W).

Hot & Dry with a top of
36deg (thankfully not humid)
and much cooler in the evening on the back nine. Robbo was the only
one missing in action, opting to play in some other Mickey Mouse
golf day - pfft!
Mark "Wally" Beardmore racked up his highest ever Massey score to
also win his first ever Massey round with a superb 40 stableford
points (19 out / 21 in) to edge out Henry & Mike on 39 pts a piece
(19/20 & 17/22 respectively).
Other scores were:
Gooey 37 (17/20), "Freddy" Wigg 35 (18/17), Murf 34 (13/21), Schimma
34 (14/20), Jimmy 33 (17/16), Glenn 32 (15/17), Q 31 (16/15) & Bean
22 (11/11).

A field of 11 presented
themselves on another fine and mild day (23deg moderate winds), where we
had the rare late scratching of Q. This presented an opportunity for,
some would say, an unlikely substitute to step forward and complete his
destiny and join the "dark side" to collate and do the reading of the
scores/handicaps etc. One source familiar with the matter said, that not
surprisingly, there were NO hecklers, but it was bit like trying to
herd cats!
Groups for Scoot's VB Classic were ....
DW/RW/GM/MH, DM/JG/AS & PW/SL/MR/MB
At the half way mark the
scores were: Dunno, I wasn't there and I don't have the cards yet.
After carding personal course
"worst" performances in first two rounds, Murf has come back hard with
two consecutive personal course "best" scores to win the last two rounds
including this round being Scoot's VB Classic (his 2nd) with a red hot
score of 41.
The heavy burden placed on the not so young apprentice did not weigh
"Darth Beano" down compiling a worthy 38pts for second place. Schimma
took advantage of the very average scores that followed to sneak into
3rd for some very handy points with a score of only 33.
By finishing =4th with a score of only 32, Henry maintains a slender
half a point lead over The Bean who has jumped into 2nd. A very
consistent Mike is currently third with the rampaging Murf now 4th with
a bullet only 4.5 points off the lead.

Perfect playing conditions (low 20's, sunny &
bugger all wind) for round three at Lang Lang GC.
We had a three way tie with a winning score of
only 35 pts. Henry (19in/16 out), Murf (17/18) & Mike (21/14 inc. wipes
on 14,15 &16)shared the maximum points. Robbo came in fourth for some
much needed points with a 33 (17/16).
Westy now takes the overall Massey lead by 2.5pts to Glenn & Mike with
The Bean in fourth only another 0.5 adrift then a bit of a gap to the
rest of the field.

Very windy (30 to 50km/h) and mild conditions
(below 20deg) for round two at Bay Views.
Wiggy was back for more with Beardy and David "Tobey" Jones as guest for
the day. Gooey was away on holiday and missed out on this one.
The mighty Bean only had one wipe for the day (on the first!) to claim a
very valuable 12 pts with a score of 39 (18 out / 21 in). Henry enjoying
a double figure handicap for the first time since October 2003 (at the
same track),
equal 2nd with a 38 (20/18).
Jimmy also with a 38 (19/19), his best score and first podium finish
since winning at Yarrawonga Lakes in 2021/22 (handicap slashed!).
I did say that it would not be the same without
Kenny & Fussy and I wasn't wrong.... Mark "Bloody" Beardmore in his
first game back for a number of years and in only the second time in
Massey history scored a HOLE in ONE on the
11th 170m Par 3. A downhill tee shot that pitched pin high just beside
the right hand green side bunker, then trickled at right angles straight
down onto the green and into the hole! A feat not seen since Jimmy the
Griff on the 9th hole at Lang Lang so so long ago (temporary green
approx. 90m from the tee).
Mark "ACE" Beardmore
As decreed way way back by the
"Rules on the Run Committee" and etched in invisible ink on the blank
web page (as with all the other rules that have been made on the run).
It reads "A hole in one shall incur $50 a corner to the lucky
bastard" ie from all other Massey members. Bloody well done
Beardy....

overall Massey Table with 17.0 pts and he has only shot scores of 31 &

THE ROUND ONE

Pleasant conditions (low to mid 20's) for the
first round of the 39th edition of The Massey.
After which, it became a reality and so hard to believe, that two much
loved stalwarts in Kenny (foundation member) and Fusspots (since
2000/01) have regrettably announced their retirements from the Massey.
Both have made such an unforgettable contribution to the "Fellowship of
The Massey" and have been an integral part of so many fabulous memories.
Each forging their own indelible mark over the journey (I have one on my
foot to prove it - don't I Kenny!). The Massey goes on, but somehow -
just won't be the same.....
David (The BIG WIG - Wiggy) Wigg was guest for the
day to aptly fill the huge gap left by Kenny. Fusspots capitalised on
his final appearance (prior to his shock announcement) and scored a
sensational 38pts (back nine first - 18out /20 in) to bow out in a blaze
of glory as the winner of the round (piss off ya bastard!). Q slipped
into 2nd with 34 (18/16) with Glenn & Mike sharing 3rd with a pair of
31's (17/14 and 13/18 respectively).

2022/23 FINAL ROUND

A very hot 38 deg forecast with 20 to
35 km/h northerly's makes for more typical Yarrawonga conditions. Where
we are ready to witness either a Ffffffirst Massey win for Fussy (52pts)
or Robbo (48.5), a Fffforth for Murf (49) or a Ffffifth for Glenn (51),
now in his favourite position of chasing the leader after his horror
back nine yesterday.
The Groups were drawn..... DM/RW/SL,
MR/MH/PW/IQ & MO/JG/AS/GM.
(The leading four in bold letters). Kenny - retired???
At the half way mark the scores were:
Schimma 21, Robbo 19, Glenn
& Jimmy 17, Murf, Henry, Gooey & Q 15, Fussy
& Mike 14, & Bean 12.
The
"live ladder" with 9 holes remaining would see Glenn now back in front
with a 2.5pt lead over Robbo, with Murf & Fussy drifting 5.5pts off the
lead in equal 3rd.
A rare sighting....while walking up the 17th fairway, a frustrated Q was
lamenting to Henry how it felt like he was playing like a "spotted poxy
cock sucker". When suddenly, Paul spotted Glenn in his bright yellow
shirt on the 16th green waving aimlessly at us. "Look, there's a Yellow
Breasted Cock Sucker!", Paul said, making himself go into involuntary
raucous laughter, as he so often does.
Anyway, I digress....
At the completion of the final round the scores were:
Robbo & Schimma 37's, (19out /18in & 21/16
respectively), Henry &
Glenn 36 (15/21 & 19/17), Fussy 35 (14/21),
Murf & Gooey 34 (15/19 a piece), Jimmy & Mike 33 (17/16 &
14/19), Q 31 (16/15), & Bean 25 (12/13).
It turned out to be the tightest finish since 1993/94 when Murf won a 3
way (18 hole) playoff from Glenn and an injured Kenny (Tassie fishing
trip ankle) with two others, Beano just 0.5 pt and M.West 1 pt from a 5
way! Here, we very nearly had a 3 way sudden death playoff. The scorer
had to methodically get to work on that massive desk calculator to
ensure everything was correct. After the signal had bounced back from
the moon, NASA had received confirmation from Mr Squiggle that
two players finished on 60pts and the winner on 60.5pts. The only
players remaining to be listed on
Beans' revered "White Board" was Fussy, Robbo & Glenn. Finally,
it was revealed that the winner, winning his Fffffffffifth Massey was
Glenn. Since taking his maiden win in Massey #24 he has now won 5 of the
last 15.

Robbo has also set a new record of 4 wins in a season albeit all ties
(ie none outright).
The Weekend Two Day Aggregate
prize money went to Murf with 75pts edging out Schimma on 74, then Henry
& Robbo with 71. Others were: MH 69, MO & JG 68, GM 64, SL 61, IQ 57, AS
56 & KB 7.
The Nancarrows Cup Matchplay Final: Mike v

The Front 9: The first hole was halved with 2pts a piece before a win to
Robbo on the 2nd, then it was all square after Mike hit back on 3. Robbo
makes his move with 3 in a row on 4, 5 & 6. Mike gets a much needed win
on 7 and holes 8 & 9 are halved. Robbo 2 up at the turn - 3 wipes did
not help Mikes cause at all.
The Back 9: The 10th is halved with one point each, Then Robbo wins 11
with a 3 pointer to go 3 up. In a massive turn around Mike goes 3pts,
3pts & 4pts to win 12, 13 & 14 to make it all square and it is now game
on. 2 pts each for a half on 15 before Robbo snags two 3 pointers with
pars on 16 & 17 to Mike's 2's to win his 2nd Matchplay title 2 and 1 in
a match worthy of a final.
Stabrose Day was played at Black Bull
GC in Yarrawonga and the three teams were: PW/MR/MO/KB, DM/GM/JG/MH &
RW/SL/IQ/AS, min 4 drives each over 16 holes. DM/GM/JG/MH
scored a massive 126pts to win in a canter over RW/SL/IQ/AS on 103 then
PW/MR/MO/KB with 95pts. The winning combination now makes up the top 4
most winning participants of the event. Dare I say it the "Stabrose
Dream Team!"
and now for a little more fiction, with a dash of mayonnaise......
A common habit of the Yellow Breasted Cock Sucker (or penis erectus
inhalis) is an annoying trait of stealing the limelight. Can be
seen in it's beautiful plumage strutting about like Mick Jagger,
complete with hands on waist and lips pursed - not seen by many since
the glory days of the Ski Club. And so the YBCS has struck once again,
stealing the limelight. The calling of the final scores could have gone
like this...
and the winner, winning his Fffffffirst ever Massey (long
pause - winner not revealed), is Mark....(longer pause - still not
revealed!). But alas, no, not to be.
So, after stealing the limelight yet again, punishment by way of
invoking the Walter Lindrum rule is hereby applied and as such, a
mandatory 1.6 shot penalty from next years starting handicap. COP
THAT COCK SUCKER!!!
Eye witness accounts have also emerged of a strange beam of light
casting a silhouette of a strutting YBCS with what looks suspiciously
like the Massey trophy, moving like Jagger across the night skies far
above Portsea East. According to sources familiar with the sightings,
the beam emanates from somewhere near Martin Manor where "Start Me Up"
can be mysteriously heard, echoing like thunder....

Back to where it all began at the Massey's nursery
of Champions.
Glenn, Murf, Jimmy, Mike, The Bean and of course, the one and
(fortunately) the only, Kenny arrived the prior day (Thursday), who had
considerately rung Q up at 2am Friday (just 2 hrs before his alarm was
due) and left a message complaining that he was the only one still up.
Gooey, Fussy, Henry, Schimma, Robbo & a very weary Q turned up at the
golf course prior to tee off on Friday. This completed the first full
book of Massey gladiator's (no sub required) to attend the final weekend
together as one since, believe it or not, the 25th anniversary
celebrations on the Gold Coast in 2009/10.
Groups for the round were drawn as follows....
DM/JG/KB/PW, MR/GM/IQ/MH (Matchplay SF's), RW/MO/AS/SL.
Glenn came into the final weekend as the Massey leader with
just a 2pt lead over
Fussy, a further 6.5pts back to Robbo
in third (both vying for their maiden Massey).. Murf
was 4th - some 11pts off the lead ahead of the rest. The weather was
fine & warm approx. 30deg.
At the half way mark scores were: Murf 22, Mike 21,
Robbo & Schimma 20, Glenn 18, Henry,
Jimmy & Beano 17, Gooey 16, Fussy 15,
Q 13 and Kenny 7. The standings on the 10th tee would have seen Glenn
with a 5pt lead over Robbo and now 7pts to Fussy & Murf.
At the end of the penultimate round Murf
took maximum points with a stellar 41 (22 out & 19 in) which consisted
of 75 strokes plus a wipe on the par 3 10th. Schimma 2nd with a 37 (20 /
17 in) and Mike third on 36 (21 / 15 in).
Other scores were: Henry 35 (17/18), Jimmy 35 (17/18), Robbo
34 (20/14),
Fussy 33 (15/18), Gooey 32 (16/16), Beano 31 (17/14),
Glenn 28 (18/10 WHAAAT!!!), Q 26 (13/13) and Kenny 7
(7 / retired after 9).
What a difference 9 holes makes, with one round
left to play Fusspot did just enough to grab a 1 pt
lead over
Glenn, who appears to have choked a bit on the back 9,
with Murf now in third place just 3 pts adrift (but 2.5
shaved from his handicap) and Robbo still right in it,
only 3.5 from the leader, Mike is 5th some 10 points behind and forget
the rest.

Nancarrow's Cup Match Play semi finalists were Glenn v Robbo
and Q v Mike.
The Front 9: Glenn won the 2nd, then Robbo scored four
in a row before Glenn clawed two back on 7 & 8 to see Robbo 1up at the
turn. Mike & Q got off to a hot start with two 3's and a 2 each on the
first 3 holes, Mike then claimed the next 5 holes (Q 3 wipes on end) in
a dominant display to turn 5 up (ouch!).
The Back 9: Robbo strikes again on 10 & 11 only to see
Glenn get those two back on 12 & 13. Holes 14 thru 17 were halved with a
wipe,2,1&1 a piece to see Robbo advance to his 3rd Final aiming for a
2nd title. Meanwhile, Mike continued on with another win on 10, Q
managed to get one back at 12 to barely stay alive, then it was dormy 5
with a halved hole on 13 before Mike rammed it home with an 8 for 1 to
another wipe on 14 to move into his 3rd Final also chasing a 2nd win.

Enough with the facts, time now for some fiction.....
A few bevvies and a nice dinner in the club house followed the round,
then everyone was glued to the big screen as it was all eyes on the
first game of the AFL season between Collingwood & Geelong.
But we hadn't done the reading of the golf scores yet
and Beano seamed a bit like a cat on a
hit tin roof as if something wasn't quite going to plan. According to
multiple sources familiar with the matter, The Bean was planning
something BIG, a huge reveal. It wasn't until about 11.00pm before we
meandered back to our rooms for some more refreshments (thanks Murf!)
and the traditional
"call of the card".
As we were getting ourselves set for the update of the scores, The Bean
came through the sliding doors interrupting proceedings to unveil what
soon became obvious was his pride & joy, a framed white board, some 38
years in the making. Complete with coloured lines meticulously setting
out various rows and columns. He then commenced what can only be
described as a pre-rehearsed presentation reminiscent of Bullwinkle The
Moose. "Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat" style.
"Nothin' up my sleeve, hmmm what's this in my pocket - Presto!". He
then pulls out a handful of coloured white board marker pens. Oh
boy, Wow wee!, was the reaction from the admiring and by now fully
charged and captivated crowd. Then "Oh hang on, what's this in my
other pocket". Gee wiz Bean!
was then heard (I
think that was Jimmy), when he pulled out several magnetic name tags of
all the Massey players to spectacularly display on the white board and
provide a visual score by score tally of the entire weekend. He then
continued with specific instructions
on what colours were to be used in each column etc.
to Schimma, who somehow found himself playing the role of "Mr Squiggle"
for the weekend. A visibly petrified Schimma would then be constantly
looking for Bean's approval to make sure he was using the correct colour
in the right column, as if to ask "how's that Miss Pat?".
Seriously, I was half expecting the white board to grumble "Hurry
Upp".
"But wait there's more" announced The Bean. He then produces, as a
stage prop, a prehistoric supersized desk calculator, like the ones that
used to take up a quarter of your desk! The adoring crowd went wild with
spontaneous laughter. Proceeding to demonstrate to the bewildered (but
also amused) scorer on how to calculate 9 points between 3 players....
"it's not rocket science!" he exclaimed. Side splitting stuff
indeed... Yet, this bloody thing looked big enough and old enough to
launch the Apollo missions (and Mr Squiggle) to the moon. The buttons on
this thing are so big they can probably be seen from the moon as well.
Although, according to some, he still couldn't press one button at a
time.
Those very same sources suggested that Beano had several messages left
on his phone from the office girl (or boy) at the Frankston City Council
Works Depot. Asking in a state of panic, "where the hell is the
white board that is used for the Maintenance Crew's daily job list".
Apparently, the crews had to improvise by setting up random traffic
control haphazardly all over the place.
Witness accounts say "that they had never looked busier leaning on
their shovels and brooms and isn't great to see our rates at work -
finally!". Oh, and that office girl (or boy),
wants their calculator back too.
The Final
Round (inc Matchplay Final) is to be played at Yarrawonga Lakes Course
on Saturday 18 March at 9.28am.
The Groups were drawn..... DM/RW/SL, MO/JG/AS/GM & MR/MH/PW/IQ. Kenny
withdrew to the club house!
Will Fussy or Robbo secure a maiden
victory, will Murf conjure up a miraculous come back weekend from 11 pts
down. Or, will the YBCS make an appearance and strut it's stuff
again???? Stay tuned folks.....
